Gold Chain Styles Explained
With so many gold chain styles out there, it can be tricky to know where to start. Curb, belcher, figaro, spiga — they all look a little different, and each has its own character. Here's a plain-English guide to the most popular styles, so you can shop with confidence.
Curb Chains
Curb chains are one of the most classic and recognisable gold chain styles. They're made from uniform, interlocking links that lie flat when worn, giving a clean, bold look. They come in a range of widths — from fine and delicate to thick and chunky — making them incredibly versatile.
Best for: Everyday wear, layering, or wearing alone as a statement piece.
Belcher Chains
Belcher chains (sometimes called rolo chains) feature round or D-shaped links connected in a simple, open pattern. They have a slightly chunkier, more substantial feel than curb chains and are a popular choice for both men and women.
Best for: A bold, distinctive look that's still understated.
Figaro Chains
Figaro chains have a distinctive pattern of alternating links — typically two or three short round links followed by one longer oval link. Originally from Italy, they have an elegant, slightly decorative feel that sets them apart from plainer styles.
Best for: Adding a touch of style without going over the top. Works beautifully with a pendant.
Spiga (Wheat) Chains
Spiga chains — also known as wheat chains — are made from four strands of oval links twisted together. The result is a delicate, textured chain that catches the light from every angle. They're one of the most elegant chain styles available.
Best for: Wearing with a pendant, or as a fine, dressy chain on its own.
Rope Chains
Rope chains are made from twisted, spiral links that resemble a length of rope. They're one of the strongest chain styles and have a beautiful, light-catching texture that makes them look great worn alone.
Best for: A statement chain that works for both casual and dressed-up occasions.
Snake Chains
Snake chains are made from tightly packed, smooth metal plates that flex as you move, creating a sleek, fluid look. They have a very different feel to linked chains — minimal, modern, and refined.
Best for: A clean, contemporary look. Particularly popular with pendants.
Franco Chains
Franco chains are similar to curb chains but with a square, V-shaped link structure that gives them extra strength and a more angular, structured look. They're a popular choice for men's jewellery.
Best for: A strong, masculine style that makes a statement.
Singapore Chains
Singapore chains have a twisted, woven pattern that creates a beautiful rippling effect as they move. They're lightweight and delicate, with a real elegance to them.
Best for: A fine, feminine chain — lovely on its own or with a small pendant.
